Lightmoves was again pleased to be involved in the design and supply of effect lighting for this year's Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show (MIFGS). Joe Casamento (Projects) teamed up with local award-winning landscape lighting specialists Light On Landscape to provide new and innovative lighting solutions to various stands.
1. PATIO DESIGN
Sydney company Patio Landscape Design constructed two displays at this year's
MIFGS. Lightmoves and LOL were approached by Patio to assist them in designing
and lighting their displays, which incorporated various luminaires from standard
low voltage lights to state-of-the-art colour changing luminaires.
1a) Harriette Rowe, Patio Landscape Design
Harriette Rowe
designed a small Japanese-inspired contemporary residential garden display.
Lightmoves custom-made some floating lanterns for the reflection pool and red
and clear Stargazer "wind lights" (budlights on sticks) that swayed
gently in the breeze and faded in/out via dimmers.
The lighting highlight of the stand however was the back-lighting of the screens using Clay Paky CP Color 150-E colour-changing floods. Colours were programmed onto an ENTTEC DMX PlayBack to complement the rich burgundy, red and purple foliage colours.
Harriette was delighted with the results, and picked up a bronze award for
her troubles!
1b) Jamie Durie, Patio Landscape Design

Jamie Durie (also
host of TV's "Backyard Blitz") designed another award-winning commercial
garden this year. Sponsored by Streetscapes and Fleming's Nurseries, this display
was the largest display at this year's show.
The objective was to create a unique urban environment, complete with pre-fabricated concrete walls and large water feature and entwining creek bed. Lightmoves lit the concrete walls with two Martin Exterior 200 floodlights to provide a highlight at the water feature end of the display.
Colours were carefully chosen by Jamie and programmed accordingly to convey an industrial feel utlising blues and mauves rather than bright "Las Vegas-style" colours.
Jamie was very enthusiastic with the aesthetics and performance of the Exteriors.
In an industry where the objective is usually to hide all landscape luminaires
as much as possible, Jamie was more than happy to make a feature of the Exteriors
rather than hide them, citing that their aluminium finish and well-designed
housings were perfect for this commercial/industrial display.
2. JENNY SMITH GARDENS

Labelled “A Recycled Life – A Cultural Rebirth”, the stand was a celebration of the life of Italian immigrants setting up a life in Australia, with the emphasis on using recycled materials and drought tolerant plants. Central to the design was the bocce court, “the central ingredient to all Italian family get togethers”.
The brief was to define the edges of this bocce court and provide an interesting highlight. This brief was fulfilled by routing the sleepers to accept SV Ultra 84 (84 x 1mm) Side Light Fibre Optic cable, powered by Digilin's powerful Kinetic 100W Outdoor Halogen light source.
The result was a great-looking cleverly designed stand based on a wonderful story. Congratulations to Luke and Diana – they too went home with an award.
